Dorothy L. Sayers

Translation from Oxonian: Dorothy Sayers in RussiaVictor Sonkin, translator, Moscow State University: «Frankly, this is an amazing story with a lot of unexpected twists and turns; come and see for yourself. It might not seem like that: «The rediscovery of Dorothy L. Sayers in Russia: A talk with her translator». Huh? First of all, do many people know who Dorothy L. Sayers was, even in England? (Do you?) Secondly, even if you do, why should that be important or even vaguely interesting?

Well, believe me, it is. Dorothy L. Sayers, apart from her tortured though outwardly serene life, was a master of crime stories rivaling Agatha Christie; and the reasons for her suppression in the USSR — unlike Christie, she was completely, absolutely unknown — are at the same time obvious and arcane. And of course, those who are interested in the art of literary translation will be delighted to hear about the difficulties the translators were facing when working on Sayers’s works (starting with the title of her magnum opus, ‘Gaudy Night’)».
